WE HAVE GOOD NEWS TO SHARE ABOUT JIM
“I was a lost soul and St. Patrick Center saved my life.”
Jim and his sister were close to their parents and cared for them together. When their father passed away followed by their mother, the siblings felt out of place. “We lost our identities and our home, eventually becoming homeless.”
Jim and his sister were placed into shelters. “We got lucky. Neither one of us had to spend a night on the streets.” Jim had walked past St. Patrick Center many times and decided to come in one day. “I was wondering if it was a good idea. It felt like unchartered territory.”
Jim joined St. Patrick Center’s Shamrock Club day treatment program and loved it. “I felt connected with the staff. They taught me new ways of thinking and acting, and I knew they were right about the changes I needed to make.”
Jim worked with his case managers to get a downtown apartment that he really likes. He also got a job at a local empowerment center, where he handles a phone line for people who need someone to talk to. Through his experiences, Jim realized he wants to advocate for people who are homeless. He now gives speeches in the community and serves on a consumer advisory board.
