VETERAN FINDS STABILITY AT ST. PATRICK CENTER
“To the people who donate to
St. Patrick Center, please don’t stop. Every life counts. Thank you for changing my life.”
After serving eight years in the U.S. Army, Charles found steady employment and a place of his own; life was good. When he began to experience mental health issues, however, things took a turn for the worse.
Charles lost his job and apartment. “The streets are scary and I wasn’t made for that. I ‘couch surfed’ with friends and family, and stayed at hotels.” Realizing that he needed help, Charles went to the VA for mental health and housing support. It was there that he learned about our Project HERO veteran program. “I came to St. Patrick Center scared and not knowing what to expect, but after talking with staff, I immediately saw how kind they were, how much they cared and knew it was where I was supposed to be.”
Through Project HERO, Charles received mental health treatment and was placed into housing. “I almost cried the first time I saw my new apartment. Having the stability of my own place made a huge difference in me getting my life back on track.”
Years later, Charles says he’s a completely different person. He still goes to therapy but has been stable since exiting our veteran program. Charles recently joined the St. Patrick Center team as an intake specialist in our Client Welcome Center. “Working here is exactly what my heart was meant to do. I love it.”
